Mon 0 Wk 5 5.30pm Driver of Success #1 - 7 Sub Drivers

Author: Si Conroy

Last week we warned you that this was going to be a heavy week. You learned that breaking down the Drivers of Success unlocks the four ways that specific, difficult goals lead to higher performance than no goals or 'do your best' goals. Taking each Driver and then reducing it down into Sub Drivers gives you the raw material required to take action, and apply the science of goals:

  1. Choice/ Direction - focus on activities that will help you achieve your goal
  2. Effort - effort is activated and stimulated
  3. Persistence - people spend longer on a specific, difficult goal
  4. Strategy - we work harder at selecting the correct strategies to achieve the task
This is Your First Driver: [cm field_name="First Driver"] Please now break this down into seven Sub Drivers. We previously used the example of setting up your own business. For the exercise over the next week, imagine you had a big 'purpose'-level goal. For example, you want to establish a charity to help homeless people find accommodation. In Forbes.com, Steve Odland suggests one of your first Drivers of Success would probably be to develop an inspiring and aspirational vision, a clear and concrete mission and a set of values. So seven Sub Drivers could be:
  1. Describe your vision as an inspirational and aspirational destination on the horizon. Communicate the future you imagine.
  2. Use all five senses to describe the vision
  3. Describe a draft big, hairy audacious outcome that fits your vision and acts as a bridge to your mission eg. We will reduce homelessness in our city by 10%
  4. Describe your mission as a clear and concise expression of the basic purpose of the organization: what does your organisation do?
  5. Who does it do it for?
  6. What is the basic service?
  7. Develop a set of values by which your organization will be led.
Got the idea?
